KCL Jazz Society Success at International Competition

During the Spring semester 2021, KCL Jazz Society collaborated with KCL Modern Music Society to form the KCL Brass Band. We decided to enter the Kaptiol Cory International Brass Band Competition in the University category on the 19th March 2021. KCL Brass Band was hugely successful and won 5 awards in total.

· 3rd Place

· Most Entertaining Programme

· Best Regional Set

· Best Percussion Section (James Green)

· Highest Placed Shield Section Band

The competition is hosted by Cory Brass Band, ranked #1 in the world. The competition featured virtual performances by bands from across the world. Each band performed a ten-minute set.

KCL Brass Band performed a set titled London Calling. The programme featured Caravan (Duke Ellington), Stardust (Hoagy Carmichael) and Puttin’ on the Ritz (Irving Berlin). You can view it here:

The band’s performance was featured in Varsity, the oldest student newspaper at the University of Cambridge. The article explored all three weeks of the competition, and presented the band’s virtual performance as one of the leading examples in the whole competition:

The performance was also featured by King’s College London at their Annual Conference for Teachers and Career Advisers (24th March 2021), in which the key note speaker was the former UK Chancellor, Professor Ed Balls.

Roar Newspaper also covered the band’s success in this article, written by Jonny Gleave, that can be viewed here:

Both KCL Jazz Society, KCL Brass Band, and KCL Modern Music Society are grateful to Jonny and ROAR for covering the event.

We’re excited to say that we will also be competing at the Foden’s Online Whit Friday Competition on May 28th and 29th 2021. More details will be released closer to the time, but we will be hosting another Watch-Along party to celebrate the occasion.
